We ARE slackers

Okay, now this is getting ridiculous. Today will be our fifth day in a row without school. Yup, you guessed it: Tri County Area Schools called it off again.

In all fairness, the back roads in our district are mostly unpaved. Sarah and I visited my parents last night and we ran into some really bad drifted and slippery sections of road on our commute there, so I’m assuming that the county just hasn’t had a chance to get to all of the roads up by our school. But, still! Gee, whiz.

If anything, this long weekend has given me the chance to discover some cool things about WordPress, the software that our web site runs on. As some of you know, one of my little side jobs is serving as webmaster for the Michigan Council of Teachers of English. This past week, I’ve been spending a lot of time putting together its new web site. My goal was to create a web site that takes most of the control over updating content out of my hands and gives it to the “higher ups” at the MCTE (a person simply can’t do this with a regular web site). I’ve got to say that I’m thrilled with the results, so please check out my handiwork at: www.mienglishteacher.org! WordPress is just awesome software.

Two words; “Budget Cuts”. The new policy for the road commisions will not allow them to plow “back roads” until the snow stops, all the main roads are clear, or theres’s more than 6″ of snow fall. Forget getting any back roads plowed on a sunday; therefore almost certainly closing school the following Monday. I happen to live in one of the largest communities in our township and have waited up to 3 days for our road to get plowed out. The back-lash of these buget cuts will be more dangerous road conditions and more “snow days” in the school system. Resolting in more money spent by the public schools in the long run. My question too you is - how many times have you passed a plow truck on a “main” road drive along doing NOTHING, when there’s many secondary roads that haven’t seen a plow in days.
